GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant integrated into development tools and GitHub workflows. It can suggest code, explain existing files, and help developers plan or carry out software changes.

Visit GitHub Copilot website (opens in a new tab)

How it works

GitHub Copilot uses the available project context and a developer's request to propose code or explanations. Depending on the workflow, assistance appears inside an editor or alongside repository work. The developer reviews the proposed changes, checks how they fit the codebase, and runs validation before accepting the resulting implementation.

What you can build

Use it while building applications to draft implementation ideas, create tests, investigate errors, and improve project documentation.

  • Implementation assistance

Draft a small feature or refactoring from a clear request, then inspect the changes and test how they interact with the surrounding application code.

  • Codebase orientation

Ask for an explanation of an unfamiliar function or error path, using the response as a starting point for inspecting the actual source yourself.

Things to consider

Use generated suggestions with normal code review and testing. Good project instructions and focused tasks help keep changes understandable and aligned with the intended behavior.
